Contrary to popular belief, the use of runes was never very popular in Iceland until a bit of a revival in the middle ages brought them there.

A lot of charts will try to directly correlate each rune to a letter. This sometimes works out fine, but it can be misleading. What I mean by that, is that when transliterating a word into runes, one should pay less attention to how a word is spelled and more to how the word SOUNDS. In the case of the Younger Futhark, this gets a bit complicated.

Near the beginning of the viking era, while the runes were being refined down to a mere sixteen characters, the Old Norse language was simultaneously developing MORE vowel sounds. All of this compounds to make this rune set significantly more difficult to learn than the Elder Runes. The mark the sound within each word that the associated rune represents.

The Elder Futhark runes are commonly believed to originate in the Old Italic scripts : either a North Italic variant Etruscan or Raetic alphabetsor the Latin alphabet itself. Derivation from the Greek alphabet via Gothic contact to Byzantine Greek culture was a popular theory in the 19th century, but has been ruled out since the dating of the Vimose inscriptions to the 2nd century while the Goths had been in contact with Greek culture only from the early 3rd century.

Conversely, the Greek-derived 4th century Gothic alphabet does have two letters derived from runes, from Jer j and from Uruz u. The angular shapes of the runes, presumably an adaptation to the incision in wood or metal, are not a Germanic innovation, but a property that is shared with other early alphabets, including the Old Italic ones compare, for example, the Duenos inscription.

The 1st century BC Negau helmet inscription features a Germanic name, Harigastizin a North Etruscan alphabet, and may be a testimony of the earliest contact of Germanic speakers with alphabetic writing. Similarly, the Meldorf inscription of 50 may qualify as "proto-runic" use of the Latin alphabet by Germanic speakers. The Raetic " alphabet of Bolzano " in particular seems to fit the letter shapes well.

There is also wide agreement that the urkhsb and o runes respectively correspond directly to VRCHSB and O. The runes of uncertain derivation may either be original innovations, or adoptions of otherwise unneeded Latin letters.

Note that the "mature" runes of the 6th to 8th centuries tend to have only three directions of strokes, the vertical and two diagonal directions.

The general agreement dates the creation of the first runic alphabet to roughly the 1st century. Early estimates include the 1st century BC, [6] and late estimates push the date into the 2nd century.

The question is one of estimating the "findless" period separating the script's creation from the Vimose finds of ca.The Wicked Griffin is still open for business. Let's get to the primal source of it all Surest are secrets shared with no one, But now my spells are sung This mysterious Proto-Indo-European culture thus played an essential role in the birth and creation of the Germanic language group. Norse Mythology itself originates from their ancient creation myths, with the oldest finds in Scandinavia possibly originating in the Nordic Bronze Age, depicting Nerthus, Tyr and also Thor.

But where do the Runes come from? It is the Alphabet of the Vikings, right? They indeed have used the Runes, but the origin is much more complex. The thesis suggests that the Runes derive from a North-Italic alphabet, especially venetic. With the conquer of the Romans, the latin alphabet became prominent and the ancient venetic culture vanished.

The hypothesis is that the ancient Italic Etruscan pagans were heavily influenced by western Greek and that the mix of Latin and Etruscan gave birth to the runic scripts. The problem is that the oral tradition of the Celtic culture reduced the possibility of finding texts. The same goes for western Germanic cultures. The Golasecca culture of the Rhaetian-family Eastern Alps: Switzerland, southern Germany, northern Italy shows interesting inscriptions that clearly resemble Runic dating back to BC.

We know that Runic is very complex, there is exoteric, esoteric and mythological dimensions to them and archaeological findings clearly point to the fact, that Runic does possibly not origin in Scandinavia, but way further down south. The mystery remains but If we choose to seek and understand the Runes, we need to dig deeper.

Celtic and western Germanic language derived from Indo-European, and more findings have shown that the Etruscan alphabet might have developed through an adaptation of the Greek alphabet, which in turn influenced the Latin alphabet heavily. But then there are the symbols of the Vinca Tablets and things become even more mysterious.

Both sound the same. For simplicity we use the letter Kaunan to represent all modern 'C' letter translations. It may also have been used for a 'CH' sound.

For words with an alternative 'C' sound like ra c e or c ease, it may be more accurate to substitute 'S' for 'C' in your translation. The sound would be something like the 'Y' in y ear. This represents the name of the god Yngvi, which may have been the original name of Freyr. The fewer characters also saves time writing, and quite frankly, looks better!
